Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa) is a tropical tree which is evergreen and is a native tree to Southeast Asia. Kratom grows to a height of between 12-30 feet tall and about 15 feet wide. Kratom can be either deciduous or evergreen depending on the prevailing climatic conditions in the area. Its leaves are dark green in color, it has an erect and branching stem. The African variety is classified differently. Kratom belongs to the coffee family. Many scientific research and studies have been conducted about kratom to study its properties or the compounds in it and these include the following.
It has been found that Mitragyna speciosa contains over 40 compounds in its leaves including many alkaloids such as mitragynine, mitraphylline and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Mitragynine was one time thought to be the most active compound in the plant but currently 7-hydroxymitragynine is the primary active chemical candidate in the kratom plant. The other active compound in kratom include raubasine and other yohimbe alkaloids such as corynantheidine. Mitragyna speciosa also contains an alkaloid called calcium channel blocker that reduces the NMDA-induced current. The amount of mitragynine compound in Mitragyna speciosa depends on a lot of factors and the location of the tree is the major factor. When the tree is grown in Southeast Asia the leaves of the tree are very high but when the kratom tree is grown in another location the leaves become very low or even non existent. Tryptamine nucleus is included in the mitragynine chemical structure and this may be the one responsible for the molecules observed in adrenergic systems and serotonin systems.
Research on kratom has also shown that it has no acute toxicity and it also displays a strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Kratom also contains several oxindole alkaloids which have shown immunomodulation properties. Mitragyna speciosa behave like a u-opioid receptor like opiates e.g. morphine. A research conducted in 2012 to study the medicinal value of Mitragyna speciosa indicated that kratom can used perfectly for the treatment of high blood pressure, muscle pain diarrhea and coughing. It was also found to have powerful analgesic effects. Another research was carried out in the year 2010 to see how the Mitragyna speciosa compounds in its extracts reacts with other different herbs when given inside living organisms. The researchers found that kratom compounds showed significant interaction with other herbs.
In 2006 another pharmacological study of 7-Hydroxymitragynine was conducted to find out the medicinal value of kratom as an active pain reliever. They studied the pharmacological properties related to 7-Hydroxymitragynine and they found out that the herb was viable for use as an oral painkiller. In 1998 another study was conducted to describe the main alkaloids in Mitragyna speciosa. The study concluded that kratom can be suitably used as an antitussive analgesic and hypothermic agent. The research concluded that all the three compounds in kratom produced analgesic effects opening up kratom for further studies.
